Silver Gelatin Darkroom Prints

For the connoisseur who wants photographs made by traditional methods, darkroom prints are available of most black & white original negatives in the collection. I have been making fine art exhibition prints for over twenty years now. I have four enlargers ranging from a 8x10" Saltzman to a 35mm Leitz Focomat. I use Zone VI archival washers. All processing is done exactly as described in Ansel Adams book "The Print." The original negative is placed in the enlarger and a print is exposed, then developed by hand in trays of chemicals. It takes a substantial amount of time and test prints to "work out the recipe" for each print. The process is time consuming, which is why darkroom prints cost more. Archival fiber prints have recognized value in the fine art market, and are preferred by collectors when investment quality is a priority. Darkroom prints cost more than our regular Ultrachrome prints and take about a month to ship. Rush service is not available.

Q: What is the difference between Darkroom and Digital prints? Darkroom prints are made with traditional techniques of sensitized paper and chemicals in the darkroom, exactly like fine art photographers have used for over a century. Digital prints are made by a digital photo printer. Silver gelatin darkroom prints are the preferred medium for fine art and investment quality photography. Digital prints are the most cost effective way of obtaining excellent archival prints for decoration and display.

Q: How do Ultrachrome prints compare with digital prints made on desktop photo printers? Ultrachrome digital prints are made with pigments that have archival permanence ratings. They are much different than ordinary color digital prints made by desktop printers using dye inks, which fade relatively quickly. Dye prints can exhibit measurable fading in just three weeks, many people can see the fading within a year, and most people can see the print turning brown within five years.
