Rattlesnake charmer lady, Oregon, 1909

9501-08 (00195)

Rattlesnake charmer lady. This image is from the files of an itinerant circus photographer who came through Oregon in 1909. The circus navigated up countless miles of rutted coastal wagon roads from Coos Bay to Seaside and then went on to Portland. The attractions included a balloon ride, a wild west show, and whatever ferocious animals would fit into the horse-drawn cage wagons. The photographer would setup alongside the menagerie. After hanging the garish backdrop just high enough to clear the grass, the photographer would be ready for portrait sittings. Most of the customers were teenagers in various states of countenance. Some of the portraits were of fellow circus workers. The photographer apparently never stayed in town long enough to wash their negatives, which are now deteriorating and becoming difficult to print.
