Archie Cody, cop killer, 1924

Archie Cody after capture. 1924. Burns, Oregon Photo by R. W. Heck. Archie Cody was wanted by the sheriff in Harney county, Oregon, for passing worthless checks. Cody had previous convictions for polygamy and larceny. On 27 August 1924, Sheriff Goodman found him at Follyfarm, Oregon, and arrested him. Cody asked permission to unsaddle his horse, which Goodman allowed. According to eyewitness reports, Cody pulled a 30-30 carbine from his saddle scabbard. Goodman and Cody each fired one shot, Cody's bullet striking an artery in Goodman's leg. Cody escaped on horseback as Goodman bled to death. A posse found Cody the next day, shooting his horse and capturing him alive. Cody was tried for first degree murder and was convicted and sentenced to death. After appeals were exhausted, he was hung on 16 April 1926. He was thirty years old at the time of his death. This photograph was taken immediately after his capture, and before he was transferred to Vale on 29 November 1924 (ref.: Luckey, Eugene; Oregon True Stories, author; Burns 1991, pg. 93 - 97)
