Trolley Wreck 11th & Morrison

Trolley wreck on SW 11th at Morrison St., Portland. November 10, 1915. Ironically, this is the present location of the downtown turnaround for Max, Portland's electric light rail train. This view is looking west and shows SW 11th street at the corner of Morrison. The New York Grocery was on the south west corner of SW 11th and Morrison Street, addressed 420 Morrison (under the old street numbering system), and this view shows the 11th street side of the store.
Trolley 649 on the left was parked at the end of the line, at 13th and Hall. The crew had left it momentarily to go into a small grocery store. While they were in the store, the brakes apparently failed. The runaway vehicle traveled at increasing speed downhill for about sixteen blocks until it crashed into car 659 near Taylor street, and then both cars continued down to Morrison and struck a third car. Car 649 had a long history of brake problems. Six persons were injured.
